How to export and import bookmarks in Opera and Opera GX

Updated 18 October 2026

To export, open Opera’s bookmarks page, click the import/export button at the bottom of the left panel and choose export: Opera saves your bookmarks as an HTML file. To import, go to Settings > Synchronization > Import bookmarks and settings and pick a browser or a bookmarks HTML file.

Export Opera bookmarks to an HTML file

  1. Open the bookmarks page. Click the heart icon in the sidebar or press Ctrl+Shift+B. From the menus: on Windows and Linux, click the Opera button at the top left and choose Bookmarks > Bookmarks; on a Mac, choose Bookmarks > Bookmarks in the menu bar.
  2. Click the import/export button at the bottom of the left side panel and choose export.
  3. Pick a folder for the HTML file and save it.

The export is a copy, so nothing changes in Opera. The bookmarks page also holds your Speed Dial entries (entries from your other devices sit under Other Speed Dials) and a Trash folder, so open the file in our free bookmarks viewer and check it has what you expect before you rely on it.

In Opera GX

Press Ctrl+Shift+B to open the GX Bookmark Manager. Opera’s GX page says you import from there with Import Bookmarks, choosing the browser and the data to bring, and that GX exports bookmarks as an HTML text file, the same kind Opera makes. A file from GX imports into Opera and the other way round.

Import bookmarks into Opera

  1. Open Settings: Alt+P on Windows and Linux, Cmd+, on a Mac, or the gear icon in the sidebar.
  2. Under Synchronization, click Import bookmarks and settings. Choosing import on the bookmarks page’s import/export button opens the same window, and so does the link at the bottom of Easy Setup.
  3. Pick the source: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Yandex, or a bookmarks HTML file for an export from any other browser.
  4. Tick what to bring. From a browser, Opera can also import history, saved passwords and cookies. Click Import.

Opera’s help says imported data shows up on the bookmarks page. If you can’t spot it, type the name of a site you know was in the file into the search bar at the top of that page; Opera searches every folder as you type.

Coming from Edge, Brave or another browser

Moving fromWhat to do
Chrome, Firefox, Safari or YandexPick it in Import bookmarks and settings. Opera reads it straight from the computer, no file needed. GX imports from Chrome the same way.
Microsoft EdgeOpera’s help doesn’t list Edge. Export your favorites as an HTML file (how to export from Edge), then choose the HTML file option.
Brave or any other browserExport an HTML file there (Brave’s steps) and import the file.
Opera GX, or Opera on another computerExport from one and import the file in the other. Between two copies of Opera, signing in to the same Opera account also works (below).
A Chrome or Brave Bookmarks fileThat’s JSON, and Opera imports HTML. Convert it with our bookmarks JSON to HTML tool first.

Passwords go separately

The HTML export is for bookmarks. For passwords, open Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Autofill > Passwords, click Settings in the left sidebar and use Download file under Export passwords. Opera reads a CSV from another browser with Select file under Import passwords. Opera’s help recommends deleting the CSV once you’re done, since it holds your passwords.

A new computer, or bookmarks on your phone

With an Opera account, signing in does the move. Opera syncs bookmarks, Speed Dial entries, history, passwords, settings and open tabs between your Opera browsers on computers and phones. Sign in under Settings > Synchronization and choose what syncs in Advanced sync settings. Signing out later leaves the data on the device.

Opera’s help pages, checked in October 2026, describe bookmark export for the computer versions only. To get bookmarks off Opera on your phone, sync the phone and a computer with the same Opera account, then export on the computer. Without an account, export the HTML file on the old computer, copy it across on a USB stick or a cloud drive, and import it on the new one.

If the export or import goes wrong

Leaving Opera? The moves have their own guides: Opera to Chrome and Opera to Firefox.
