How to save all your tabs in Opera and Opera GX

Updated 18 October 2026

Right-click any tab and choose Save > All tabs as a Speed Dial folder: Opera puts every tab in the window into a new folder at the bottom of your Speed Dial. To have Opera reopen your tabs each time it starts, set On startup to Retain tabs from previous session.

Save all tabs as a Speed Dial folder

  1. Right-click any tab (Ctrl+click on a Mac), or an empty part of the tab bar.
  2. Choose Save, then All tabs as a Speed Dial folder. Opera’s help also words it Save all tabs as Speed Dial folder.
  3. Open the start page. The new, untitled folder sits at the bottom of your Speed Dial. Right-click it and choose Edit Title to name it.

To save only some tabs, Ctrl+click them (Cmd+click on a Mac), right-click one of the selected tabs and choose Save tabs as a Speed Dial folder. The same menu also has Tab to Pinboards; Pinboards are Opera’s boards for links, notes and images.

Windows and workspaces: the save covers the window you’re in. Opera’s help also says tab menu commands act on the current workspace only, so if you use Workspaces (up to five, at the top of the sidebar), switch to each one and save it separately.

Move the folder into your bookmarks

Opera files Speed Dial entries on the bookmarks page along with your bookmarks, so the folder already holds bookmarks. To keep it with the rest:

  1. Open the bookmarks page with Ctrl+Shift+B or the heart icon in the sidebar.
  2. Open Speed Dial in the left panel, find the new folder and drag it onto Other bookmarks or Bookmarks bar. Opera’s help says any folder in that panel can be dragged to a new spot, and a forum moderator confirms Speed Dial folders move the same way.

To get the tabs back, right-click the folder and open everything in it; an Opera forum moderator says a folder opens in the current window or a new one. Want the tabs in a file? Once the folder is in your bookmarks, the import/export button at the bottom of the bookmarks page saves them as an HTML file with the rest (export steps).

Keep tabs when Opera closes

  1. Open Settings with Alt+P (Cmd+, on a Mac) or the gear icon in the sidebar.
  2. Under Basic, go to On startup.
  3. Choose Retain tabs from previous session.

Opera then opens every tab you left open last time. Begin fresh with start page starts without them, though pinned tabs stay pinned. Open a specific page or a set of pages opens a fixed list, and its Use current pages button copies in the tabs you have open now, a simple way to keep one set for every launch.

If your tabs didn’t come back

Opera GX

The same steps work in GX, going by Opera’s forums. A moderator sends GX users to the same On startup section in Settings (a forum volunteer gives the direct address, opera://settings/onStartup), and a volunteer’s steps for a GX user use the same Save > All tabs as a Speed Dial folder item.

Tab Islands and Tab Commands

Lists of links, and too many tabs

Have your tabs as a list of links? Our free open multiple URLs tool opens a pasted list in new tabs, and URLs to bookmarks turns it into a bookmarks file that Opera imports under Settings > Synchronization > Import bookmarks and settings. A OneTab export goes through the OneTab converter the same way. If sixty open tabs are the real problem, see too many tabs and tab bankruptcy.
