How to move bookmarks from Opera and Opera GX to Firefox
Firefox imports straight from Opera and Opera GX. Open Firefox’s Settings, click Import Data under Import browser data, pick Opera or Opera GX and click Import. Your Opera bookmarks bar goes onto Firefox’s Bookmarks Toolbar, and on Windows and Mac your passwords can come along.
Method 1: Firefox’s import wizard
- In Firefox, click the menu button > Settings and, on the Account and sync page, click Import Data. The Library has the same wizard under Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser…
- Choose Opera or Opera GX. Opera can show one entry per profile; Opera GX always has a single entry.
- Click the + button, tick what you want, then click Import and Done.
What Firefox can take depends on the browser and your system:
| Import from | Windows and Mac | Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Opera | Bookmarks, saved passwords, history, form data | Bookmarks, history, form data |
| Opera GX | Bookmarks, saved passwords, history, form data | Not offered: Firefox lists Opera GX on Windows and Mac only |
History means the 2,000 most recently visited pages from the last 180 days. Extensions stay behind, because Firefox only matches add-ons when it imports from Chrome.
Where Opera’s bookmarks go
| Firefox folder | What arrives from Opera |
|---|---|
| Bookmarks Toolbar | Everything on Opera’s bookmarks bar, added after what’s already there; Firefox switches the toolbar on |
| Other Bookmarks | The two other standard folders Opera’s bookmarks file shares with Chrome: Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks |
| Bookmarks Menu | Nothing from the wizard; an HTML file import goes here |
Firefox reads only three folders of Opera’s file: the bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks. Opera’s help says its bookmark manager also organizes Speed Dial entries like bookmarks, with entries from your other devices under Other Speed Dials, and keeps deleted bookmarks in Trash. After the import, look for a few of your Speed Dial sites. If they’re missing, export an HTML file (Method 2), open it in our bookmarks viewer and search for them before importing. Sites in neither can be bookmarked into a normal Opera folder first.
Method 2: export an HTML file from Opera
- Open the bookmarks page. In Opera, use the Opera menu at the top left (Windows and Linux) > Bookmarks > Bookmarks, or on a Mac Bookmarks > Bookmarks. In Opera GX, press Ctrl+Shift+B for the Bookmark Manager.
- Click the import/export button at the bottom of the left panel, choose export and pick where to save the HTML file.
- In Firefox, open the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O, or Cmd+Shift+O on a Mac), click Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML… and choose the file.
Everything from the file goes into Firefox’s Bookmarks Menu, which the Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B) shows. Drag folders onto the Bookmarks Toolbar in the Library if you want them in view. Exporting Opera bookmarks has more on Opera’s side.
Passwords
On Windows and Mac, tick Saved passwords in the wizard. On Linux, or if some are missing, use Opera’s CSV export: open Settings (Alt+P), click Advanced > Privacy & security, then Passwords under Autofill. In the Password Manager, click Settings in the left sidebar and then Download file next to Export passwords. Import the file in Firefox with Import Data > Passwords from CSV file, then delete it, as Opera recommends.
Problems you might hit
- Opera isn’t in Firefox’s list: Firefox lists only browsers it finds data for. On Windows it looks in
%APPDATA%\Opera Software\Opera Stable, orOpera GX Stablefor GX; on a Mac, in~/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera(com.operasoftware.OperaGXfor GX). If Opera keeps its data somewhere else, use the HTML file. - Opera won’t start: its bookmarks sit in a file named
Bookmarksin that folder, or in a profile folder inside it, in Chrome’s format. Copy it, convert it with our bookmarks JSON to HTML converter and import the result into Firefox. - Firefox asks for folder access: the Snap version of Firefox on Linux needs your permission to read Opera’s folder. Click Continue and pick the folder it names.
- Duplicates: every import adds a full copy. Delete the second set in the Library, or clean the export with our duplicate bookmark finder.
- Keeping both browsers: Opera syncs through an Opera account and Firefox through a Mozilla account, so changes in Opera need another import later. Our bookmark merger combines an export from each into one file without duplicates.
