How to move bookmarks from Opera or Opera GX to Chrome
Export an HTML file from Opera’s bookmarks page, then import it into Chrome. Chrome’s import window has no option for Opera or Opera GX, so the file is the only built-in way across.
Step 1: export from Opera or Opera GX
- Open the bookmarks page. In Opera, click the bookmarks icon in the sidebar, or the Opera menu button at the top left (Windows and Linux) > Bookmarks > Bookmarks; on a Mac choose Bookmarks, then Bookmarks. In Opera GX, Ctrl+Shift+B opens the Bookmark Manager.
- Click the import/export button at the bottom of the left panel and choose export.
- Pick where to save the HTML file.
Step 2: import into Chrome
- In Chrome, open the Bookmark Manager (Ctrl+Shift+O, or Cmd+Option+B on a Mac).
- Click the three-dot menu at the top right, choose Import bookmarks and pick the file from Opera.
- Find the new folder called Imported at the end of the bookmarks bar. If Chrome’s bar was empty, the bookmarks land on the bar itself.
Check the file before you import
Opera’s bookmark manager holds more than Chrome’s. Opera’s help says Speed Dial entries are organized like bookmarks, with entries from your other devices under Other Speed Dials, and deleted bookmarks wait in a Trash folder until you empty it. What ends up in the export can vary, so open the file in our bookmarks viewer first and search for a few of your Speed Dial sites. If they’re missing, bookmark those sites in a normal folder in Opera and export again; if folders you don’t want are in the file, delete them in Opera before exporting.
What stays in Opera
- Passwords: the bookmarks file has none. Export them from Opera’s password settings as a CSV file, import that in Chrome under Google Password Manager > Settings > Import passwords, then delete the CSV.
- History and open tabs: Chrome has no Opera importer, so these stay behind.
- Opera-only features such as Workspaces, Tab Islands and Pinboards have no counterpart in the file.
- Sync: Opera syncs through an Opera account, which Chrome can’t read. Signing out of it leaves your bookmarks on the computer, so you can export at any time.
Problems you might hit
- Duplicates after a second try: Chrome adds a second folder, Imported (1), with the same links. Delete it, or run the export through our duplicate bookmark finder.
- No bookmarks bar in Chrome: press Ctrl+Shift+B (Cmd+Shift+B on a Mac). Showing the bookmarks bar has the other ways.
- Synced everywhere: when Chrome saves bookmarks in your Google Account, the imported folder reaches every signed-in device.
Chrome’s new tab page shows a few site shortcuts and has nothing like Speed Dial. If you liked a start page full of your own bookmarks, Stackboard turns Chrome’s new tab into a board of them, spaces down the side and stacks of links across, and one click copies the imported folder in.
Questions
Can Chrome import bookmarks from Opera GX directly?
No. Chrome’s import window has no Opera or Opera GX option. Export an HTML file from GX’s Bookmark Manager (Ctrl+Shift+B) and import that.
How do I export bookmarks from Opera?
Open the bookmarks page, click the import/export button at the bottom of the left panel and choose export. Opera saves an HTML file that any browser can import.
Do Opera Speed Dials transfer to Chrome?
Only if they’re in the exported file, which you can check in our bookmarks viewer. Chrome has no Speed Dial, so they arrive as ordinary bookmarks.
Can Opera import from Chrome?
Yes. Opera’s Settings > Synchronization > Import bookmarks and settings reads Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Yandex directly, so going that way needs no file.
Will my Opera passwords come too?
Not in the bookmarks file. Export them separately from Opera as a CSV file and import it in Google Password Manager’s settings in Chrome.
