How to export your Chrome bookmarks
Open the Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac), click the three-dot menu at the top right of the page and choose Export bookmarks. Chrome saves every bookmark into one HTML file that other browsers, and Chrome itself, can import.
Export your bookmarks, step by step
- Open Chrome on your computer and press Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac). The long way is Chrome’s three-dot menu, then Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager (called Open bookmarks manager in the newest versions). Typing
chrome://bookmarksin the address bar works too. - Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the Bookmark Manager page, just below Chrome’s own menu.
- Choose Export bookmarks.
- Pick a folder and click Save. Chrome suggests your Documents folder and a name with today’s date, such as
bookmarks_10_18_26.html.
Exporting changes nothing in Chrome. The file is a copy, and your bookmarks stay where they are.
What the file contains
- Every bookmark in the profile: the bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks (the ones synced from your phone). If your Bookmark Manager splits bookmarks into In your Google Account and Only on this device, both groups go in.
- Titles, addresses and dates: each bookmark keeps the date you added it, plus the site icon when Chrome has one.
- The standard layout: the bookmarks bar stays a folder, and the contents of Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks sit at the top level of the file. Other browsers expect this format, so those bookmarks can land in a slightly different place after an import.
The file holds bookmarks only: no passwords, history, open tabs, reading list or saved tab groups. Passwords have their own export under the three-dot menu > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > Settings > Export passwords.
Export one folder or just the bookmarks bar
Chrome always exports everything; the Bookmark Manager has no option to pick a folder. Two workarounds do the job:
- Copy the links as text. Open the folder in the Bookmark Manager, press Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+C (Cmd on a Mac). Chrome copies the web addresses, one per line, without titles; subfolders come through as their names only. Paste the list into a text file or a spreadsheet. Our URL list to bookmarks tool can turn it back into a file Chrome imports.
- Use a spare profile. Add a Chrome profile and choose Continue without an account, then copy the folder across (Ctrl+C in one Bookmark Manager, Ctrl+V in the other). Export from the spare profile, then delete it. Copying bookmarks between profiles has the details.
Export to CSV or Excel
Chrome only writes HTML. For a spreadsheet, export as above and drop the file into our free bookmarks to CSV converter, which gives you a CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets.
On Android, iPhone or iPad
Chrome’s phone and tablet apps have no export option, and Google’s export steps are for computers only. Sign in to Chrome on a computer with the same Google Account, wait for your bookmarks to arrive (phone bookmarks usually sit in Mobile bookmarks), then export there.
If the export doesn’t work
- You can’t find the file: look in Documents for a file whose name starts with
bookmarks_. - No Save window on a work computer: an administrator can turn off file dialogs with the AllowFileSelectionDialogs policy, and Chrome then shows a message in place of the window.
chrome://policylists the policies in force. - Bookmarks missing from the file: the export covers only the profile you’re in, and bookmarks saved in your Google Account leave the computer when you sign out. Check the profile picture at the top right, then see bookmarks that disappeared.
Make it a habit
Chrome has no bookmark trash, and Google’s help says a deleted bookmark can’t be brought back. An export every month or so, kept off the computer on a cloud drive or USB stick, is cheap insurance and makes recovering deleted bookmarks much easier. If you use Stackboard, its spaces are ordinary bookmarks under Other bookmarks › Stackboard, so this file includes them too.
Exporting from another browser
Each browser keeps the export in a different menu: see how to export bookmarks from Firefox, Edge, Safari, Brave and Opera or Opera GX.
Questions
Where does Chrome save exported bookmarks?
Wherever you pick in the Save window. Chrome suggests your Documents folder and a file name with the date, such as bookmarks_10_18_26.html.
Can I export Chrome bookmarks and passwords together?
Not in one file. The bookmarks export holds bookmarks only. Export passwords separately: three-dot menu > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > Settings > Export passwords.
How do I export Chrome bookmarks on Android or iPhone?
The phone apps can’t export. Sign in to Chrome on a computer with the same Google Account, let your bookmarks sync, and export from the Bookmark Manager there.
Can I export only the bookmarks bar or one folder?
Not directly, because Chrome exports everything. Copy the folder into a spare profile and export that, or select the folder’s contents in the Bookmark Manager and press Ctrl+C to copy the addresses as text.
