How to export your favorites from Microsoft Edge
Press Ctrl+Shift+O to open Favorites, select More options (…) and choose Export favorites. Edge saves all your favorites, its word for bookmarks, in one HTML file that other browsers and Edge itself can import.
Export your favorites, step by step
- Open Favorites: press Ctrl+Shift+O, or select Settings and more (…) at the top right of the window and choose Favorites. On a Mac, use the menu route.
- Select More options (…), above the list of favorites.
- Choose Export favorites.
- Pick where the file goes and select Save. Edge suggests a name in the form
favorites_month_day_year.html, so an export made on 18 October 2026 isfavorites_10_18_26.html. You can type a name you’ll recognize.
Exporting copies your favorites and changes nothing in Edge. Microsoft suggests saving the file to your hard drive, a USB drive or an SD card; a copy kept off the computer is the one that helps if the computer itself fails.
What the file holds
Microsoft describes the export as an HTML page that lists all your favorites in lists and nested folders. That means the Favorites bar and Other favorites, plus Mobile favorites if you save favorites on a phone with sync on. Folders keep their subfolders.
Passwords have their own export, covered below. To check what the file contains before you rely on it, open it in our free bookmarks viewer; for a spreadsheet, drop it into bookmarks to CSV.
Export only the favorites bar or one folder
Microsoft’s steps export everything at once, with no way to pick a folder. Three workarounds:
- Trim it after the import. Import the whole file into the other browser, keep the folder you wanted and delete the rest. Edge to Chrome shows where everything lands in Chrome.
- Use a spare profile. Click your profile icon at the top right, choose Set up a new profile, import the full file there, delete everything except the folder you want and export again. Then remove the spare profile in Edge’s settings, which deletes its favorites from the computer.
- Need a list? In bookmarks to CSV, every row carries its folder path, so a filter on that column in Excel or Google Sheets gives you one folder.
Export favorites and passwords
Passwords never go into the favorites file. Edge exports them separately as a CSV file:
- Open Settings and more (…), or press Alt+F, and select Passwords.
- Select the three-dot button next to Passwords, choose Export passwords and confirm with Export.
- Choose where to save the file.
Microsoft warns that the CSV isn’t protected: anyone who can open the file can read every password in it. Once you’ve imported it elsewhere, select it and press Shift+Delete to delete it permanently.
On Android or iPhone
Microsoft’s help for Edge on phones covers syncing and viewing favorites and gives no export steps, and its password help says Edge for Android and iOS can’t export saved passwords. Go through a computer:
- In the Edge app, open the menu (…) > Settings and tap your profile picture. Under Sync settings, tap Sync and make sure sync is on with Favorites selected.
- On a computer, sign in to Edge with the same account: profile icon > your account > Sign in to sync data.
- Export as above. Favorites saved on the phone are in Mobile favorites.
If the export doesn’t work
- A message appears where the Save window should be: on a work computer, an administrator can turn off Edge’s file windows with the AllowFileSelectionDialogs policy. Type
edge://policyin the address bar to see the policies in force. - You can’t find the file: search File Explorer or Finder for
favorites_, the start of Edge’s suggested name. - Favorites are missing from it: each Edge profile keeps its own favorites, so check the profile icon and export from the right one. Favorites from your phone appear only after sync has caught up.
Before you import it somewhere
Clean up first. Microsoft says the Favorites menu has an option to remove duplicate links, and Edge lets you inspect the duplicates before they’re deleted. Our duplicate bookmark finder does the same to the exported file, and the bookmark merger combines exports from several computers into one. Moving to Chrome or Brave? After the import, Stackboard can copy your bookmarks bar, imported favorites included, into a space on the new tab page.
Questions
How do I export favorites from Microsoft Edge?
Press Ctrl+Shift+O, select More options (…) and choose Export favorites, then save the HTML file. The menu route is Settings and more > Favorites > More options > Export favorites.
Can I export bookmarks and passwords from Edge together?
They come out as two files. Favorites go to an HTML file from the Favorites menu; passwords go to a CSV from Settings and more > Passwords > the three-dot button > Export passwords. Delete the CSV once you’ve used it.
How do I export bookmarks from Edge on Android or iPhone?
Microsoft’s help for the phone apps has no export. Turn on sync for favorites on the phone, sign in to Edge on a computer with the same account and export there; phone favorites sit in Mobile favorites.
Can I export only the favorites bar in Edge?
Not directly, because the export includes every favorite. Import the file elsewhere and delete what you don’t need, or import it into a spare Edge profile, trim it there and export again.
Where does Edge save exported favorites?
Wherever you choose in the Save window. Edge suggests a name such as favorites_10_18_26.html, so a search for favorites_ finds the file later.
Use Chrome or Brave as well?
Stackboard is a free extension for Chrome and Brave that turns the new tab page into a board of your own bookmarks. No account, nothing leaves your browser.
