How to save tab groups in Chrome and open them later

Updated 18 October 2026

Recent versions of Chrome save every tab group automatically, so there's nothing to switch on. Close a group and it waits in the three-dot menu under Tab groups, and on the bookmarks bar if you show it there. When you're signed in with tab sync on, your groups also show up on your other devices.

Tip: Older guides tell you to turn on a Save group switch. That switch belonged to older versions of Chrome. Current versions save every group, so you won't find it.

Make a tab group

  1. Right-click a tab and choose Add tab to new group. If you already have groups, the menu says Add tab to group; pick New group from it. To start with several tabs, Ctrl+click them first (Cmd+click on a Mac), then right-click one of them.
  2. Type a name and pick a color. A collapsed group shows only its name, so keep it short. Emoji work too.
  3. Add more tabs later by dragging them into the group.

Click the group's name to collapse or expand it.

Where your saved groups are

Close, delete and ungroup are different

Right-click the group name, thenThe tabsThe group
Close groupCloseStays saved. Reopen it from Tab groups
Delete groupCloseRemoved from this device and every device on your Google Account
UngroupStay open, looseRemoved from this device and every device on your Google Account

Chrome asks you to confirm before it deletes or ungroups. If you only want the tabs out of the way, Close group is the safe choice.

Sync tab groups across devices

  1. Sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account on each device.
  2. On your computer, open Settings, then You and Google, select your account name and turn on History and tabs.

With that on, Google says changes to tab groups are saved and synced across your devices. Chrome on Android, iPhone and iPad has tab groups too, in the tab switcher's Tab groups view. On Android you can stop groups from other devices opening by themselves: go to Settings, Tabs and tab groups and turn off Automatically open tab groups from other devices.

Keep a copy as bookmarks

A saved group can still be deleted from any of your devices. For a group you can't afford to lose, save it as bookmarks as well:

  1. Right-click the group's name and choose Move group to new window. Skip this if the group is the only thing in its window.
  2. In that window, press Ctrl+Shift+D (Cmd+Shift+D on a Mac) and click Save. Chrome saves the tabs in a new folder, with the group as a subfolder under its own name.
  3. To get the group back later, right-click that subfolder and choose Open all in new tab group.

With Stackboard

Stackboard keeps groups as ordinary Chrome bookmarks. Stash this window (Alt+Shift+S) saves every tab in the window, one stack per tab group plus one for loose tabs, then closes them. Each stack reopens as a named tab group in one click, and because the stacks are bookmarks, deleting a tab group in Chrome leaves them alone.

Tab groups work differently in other browsers: see Firefox tab groups, Edge tab groups and Safari Tab Groups.

Questions

Does Chrome save tab groups automatically?

Yes, in recent versions. Every group is saved, and closing a group keeps it in the Tab groups menu until you delete it.

How do I view my saved tab groups?

Open the three-dot menu and choose Tab groups, or click the Tab groups button at the left end of the bookmarks bar.

Can I save a tab group as a bookmark folder?

Yes. Move the group to its own window and press Ctrl+Shift+D. Chrome saves the group as a folder with the group's name.

Why aren't my tab groups syncing?

Make sure you're signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account everywhere and that History and tabs is on in your sync settings. On Android, also check Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
