Firefox tab groups: create one, save it and get it back

Updated 18 October 2026

Firefox has tab groups built in, with no add-on needed. Drag one tab onto another to make a group, right-click the group’s name and choose Save and close group to put it away, and reopen it later from the List all tabs menu at the right end of the tab strip.

Create a tab group

  1. Drag a tab onto another tab, wait until the drop area highlights, and let go.
  2. Or right-click a tab and choose Add Tab to New Group. Once you have groups, the item reads Add Tab to Group, with New Group inside. Ctrl+click several tabs first (Cmd+click on a Mac) to group them in one go.
  3. Type a name and pick one of nine colors. You can change both later.

Click the group’s name to collapse or expand it. Hovering over a collapsed group lists its tabs, and dropping a tab on a collapsed group’s name adds it without opening the group. To take a tab out, right-click it and choose Remove from Group; a group with no tabs left is deleted.

Tip: If dragging doesn’t make a group, turn on Drag tabs together to create tab groups in Settings > Tabs and browsing. The same section has Use AI to suggest tabs and a name for tab groups, which Mozilla says runs on your device and is only offered in English.

What the group menu does

Right-click a group’s name to open Manage tab group, where you can also rename it and change its color:

OptionWhat happens
New tab in groupOpens a new tab inside the group
Move group to new windowGives the group a window of its own
Copy 5 links in group (with your group’s count)Copies every address, one per line
Save and close groupCloses the tabs and keeps the group to reopen
Ungroup tabsLeaves the tabs open and removes the group
Delete groupCloses the tabs and removes the group

Save a group and reopen it later

  1. Right-click the group’s name and choose Save and close group.
  2. To reopen it, click List all tabs at the right end of the tab strip (with vertical tabs, the List all tabs button on the toolbar). Recent tab groups lists your latest groups, open ones first, and Show all appears once you have more than five.
  3. Click a closed group to open it in the current window, or right-click it for Open Group in New Window or Delete Group.

Typing a group’s name in the address bar also offers to open it. Save and close group is greyed out when the group holds only new tabs or blank pages, and it’s missing in private windows, whose groups are deleted when the window closes. Nightly builds of Firefox 160 (October 2026) rename List all tabs to Search and manage tabs, the name Mozilla’s help already mentions.

Do groups survive closing Firefox?

Yes. With Open previous windows and tabs ticked in Settings > Home and startup, they come back on the tab strip. With it off, Firefox keeps the groups from your last session in the List all tabs menu, and History > Restore previous session puts them back in place. Closing a window saves its groups to the same list.

Tab groups gone? Where to look

Do Firefox tab groups sync?

No. Mozilla says tab groups are local only and don’t sync with Firefox Sync, although with Sync on, the open tabs inside a group still appear under Tabs from other devices like any other tab. To take a group with you, save it as bookmarks, which do sync: choose Move group to new window, expand the group and press Ctrl+Shift+D (Cmd+Shift+D). Its copied links also work in our free URLs to bookmarks tool, which makes a file any browser imports.

Tab groups or containers?

They do different jobs and work together. A tab group arranges tabs in the tab strip. A container keeps a set of tabs’ cookies and sign-ins apart from the rest, so you can be signed in to two accounts on the same site. Containers are switched on with Use Container Tabs in Settings > Tabs and browsing.

On Android and iPhone

Firefox for Android has tab groups too. In the tab tray, touch and hold a tab and drag it onto another, or tap a tab’s three-dot menu and choose Add to group, then name the group and pick a color. Groups get their own section in the tab tray, Delete group removes one for good, and closing the last tab in a group makes Firefox ask whether to delete it. Mozilla’s current help for iPhone and iPad covers regular, private and synced tabs, with no tab groups.

Questions

Does Firefox have tab groups?

Yes. Tab groups are built into Firefox on computers, with no add-on needed, and Firefox for Android has them too. Drag one tab onto another to start a group.

How do I save and close a tab group in Firefox?

Right-click the group’s name and choose Save and close group. Reopen it from List all tabs at the right end of the tab strip, under Recent tab groups.

Why did my Firefox tab groups disappear?

Usually they were saved: check List all tabs > Recent tab groups and Show all. Deleted groups are under History > Recently closed tabs, and groups from private windows are deleted when the window closes.

Do Firefox tab groups sync between devices?

No. Mozilla says tab groups are local only and don’t sync with Firefox Sync. Save a group as bookmarks if you need it on another computer.

Can I save a Firefox tab group to bookmarks?

Yes. Choose Move group to new window, expand the group, then press Ctrl+Shift+D and click Save. Firefox bookmarks the window’s tabs into one folder.

Use Chrome or Brave as well?

Stackboard is a free extension for Chrome and Brave that turns the new tab page into a board of your own bookmarks. No account, nothing leaves your browser.
