Edge tab groups: how to make them, and does Edge save them?
Yes, Edge has tab groups. Right-click a tab, choose Add tab to new group, then pick a color and type a name. Microsoft’s release notes say Edge has saved tab groups automatically since version 140 (September 2025), so a group survives switching tasks and restarting the browser.
Create and name a tab group
- Right-click a tab and choose Add tab to new group (Microsoft’s feature page words it Add tab to a group). A group can hold one tab or every tab you have open.
- Pick a color and type a name. The name shows in that color to the left of the group’s tabs.
- For the next tab, right-click it and choose the same option. The menu now offers a new group or one of the groups you already have.
Edge also groups tabs when you drag one onto another, and since Edge 142 the Drag to group tabs switch at edge://settings/appearance/tabs turns that on or off. Groups work with vertical tabs as well.
Rename, recolor, ungroup or close
- Rename or recolor: right-click the group’s name, or hover over it, and select Edit.
- Take one tab out: right-click the tab and choose Remove from group.
- Ungroup or close: Microsoft’s guide says you can ungroup a group’s tabs, which keeps them open, or close a whole group at once.
Let Edge group your tabs
Select Search tabs at the top left, then Organize tabs, and Edge sorts your tabs into groups by relevance, each with a name and a color. It can also suggest a name when you make a group yourself. To do either, Edge sends the tabs’ addresses, titles and existing groups to Microsoft’s tab organization service, which Microsoft says deletes the data straight after processing. The switch for this is Let Microsoft Edge help keep your tabs organized at edge://settings/privacy/services; with the service off, new groups get plain names such as Group 1.
Does Edge save tab groups?
Yes. Microsoft’s notes for Edge 140 say Edge now saves tab groups automatically and keeps them ready to revisit when you switch tasks or restart the browser. The feature is linked to sync: Edge’s sync settings have a Workspaces and Tab Groups switch (Settings > Profiles > Sync), and administrators can turn the feature off by excluding open tabs from sync.
Microsoft’s help pages and release notes don’t say where a group you’ve closed waits to be reopened. Straight after closing one, Ctrl+Shift+T brings it back, because Chromium, which Edge is built on, keeps a closed group as a single entry in its closed-tab list. For a group you’ll want next month, keep a copy too.
Keep tab groups when you close Edge
- Select Settings and more (…) > Settings > Start, home, and new tab page.
- Under When Edge starts, choose Open tabs from the previous session.
Microsoft’s Learning Center says your tabs and tab groups can all be restored this way. Groups in InPrivate or Guest windows never come back.
Save a tab group for later
| Method | How | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Favorites | Ctrl+Shift+D saves all open tabs as favorites in a new folder; delete the ones outside the group | A plain folder you can export or import anywhere |
| A workspace | Right-click a tab and choose Move tab to, or Search tabs > Manage workspaces > New Workspace > Create workspace with X tabs | Edge 144 or later, desktop only, signed in |
| Collections | Gone | Microsoft removed Collections in Edge 149 (June 2026), so older advice to add a group to a collection no longer works |
More on both in how to save all tabs in Edge.
Edge not saving tab groups?
- An older Edge. Automatic saving arrived in Edge 140. Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge tells you if Edge is up to date.
- The startup setting. Set When Edge starts to Open tabs from the previous session so groups reopen at startup.
- InPrivate, Guest or another profile. InPrivate and Guest tabs aren’t restored, and each profile keeps its data separate, so check the profile icon at the top right.
- Sync is off. Turn on Workspaces and Tab Groups under Settings > Profiles > Sync on each device.
- A work or school device. The SyncTypesListDisabled policy with
openTabsswitches automatic group saving off, and RestoreOnStartup can set what Edge opens at startup.edge://policyshows both. - Edge crashed. Accept the Restore pages dialog when it reopens, or see reopening closed tabs in Edge.
If you also use Chrome or Brave
Chrome keeps closed groups in its own Tab groups menu (saving tab groups in Chrome). In both browsers, Stackboard, a free extension, stashes a window as ordinary bookmarks with one stack per tab group, and reopens any stack as a named tab group in one click. Have a group’s links as a list? Our open multiple URLs tool opens them all in any browser.
