How to close all tabs in Chrome at once

Updated 18 October 2026

To close every tab in a window, close the window: press Ctrl+Shift+W on Windows and Linux or Cmd+Shift+W on a Mac. To keep one tab and close the rest, right-click that tab and choose Close other tabs.

Close all tabs but one

  1. Right-click the tab you want to keep.
  2. Choose Close other tabs.

Pinned tabs stay open. To keep a few tabs, Ctrl+click them first (Cmd+click on a Mac) and right-click one of them: Close other tabs then keeps every selected tab. Google's shortcut list has no key for this one.

Close tabs to the right

Right-click a tab and choose Close tabs to the right to close every tab after it, which suits a research session that started from one page and sprawled. Pinned tabs are skipped. With vertical tabs turned on, the same command is called Close tabs below.

Close several tabs at once

Hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and click each tab, or click one tab and Shift+click another to select everything between them. Right-click any highlighted tab and choose Close. Tab Search (Ctrl+Shift+A) works too: it lists tabs from every window, each with its own close button.

Close every window: quit Chrome

If On startup is set to Continue where you left off, quitting leaves the tabs in place: Chrome reopens them next time. For a clean start, close the tabs first (Close other tabs on a new tab), then quit.

Closed too many?

Press Ctrl+Shift+T (Cmd+Shift+T on a Mac) to reopen what you closed, newest first. A closed window comes back whole. History in the three-dot menu also lists your most recently closed tabs and windows. Details in how to reopen closed tabs.

Save them before you close them

If some of those tabs might matter later, save them first. Ctrl+Shift+D bookmarks every tab in the window into one folder (see how to save all open tabs). Stackboard saves and closes in one move: Alt+Shift+S stashes the window as bookmarks and leaves pinned tabs open, and Declare tab bankruptcy in its popup does every window at once.

Questions

Is there a shortcut to close all tabs in Chrome?

Close the window: Ctrl+Shift+W on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+W on a Mac. That closes every tab in it.

How do I close all tabs except one?

Right-click the tab you want to keep and choose Close other tabs. Pinned tabs stay open.

Why do my tabs come back after I close Chrome?

Your On startup setting is Continue where you left off, which reopens whatever was open when Chrome quit. Close the tabs before quitting, or change the setting at chrome://settings/onStartup.

Does closing a tab group delete it?

No. Close group keeps it in the Tab groups menu so you can reopen it. Delete group removes it from all your signed-in devices.
