How to import bookmarks into Firefox

Updated 18 October 2026

For a bookmarks HTML file, open the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O, or Cmd+Shift+O on a Mac), click Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML… and pick the file. Firefox adds the bookmarks to the ones you have, inside the Bookmarks Menu folder, which is why they don’t appear on the toolbar.

Pick the right import

You haveUseWhere the bookmarks land
An HTML fileLibrary > Import Bookmarks from HTML…Bookmarks Menu, in their original folders
Another browser on this computerSettings > Import DataIts bookmarks bar on your Bookmarks Toolbar; from Chrome-based browsers, the rest in Other Bookmarks
A Firefox .json backup, added to what you haveImport Data > Bookmarks from HTML fileBack in the folders they came from
A .json or .jsonlz4 backup, replacing everythingLibrary > Restore > Choose File…Your current bookmarks are replaced

Import an HTML file

  1. Export the file from the other browser first: Chrome, Edge, Safari.
  2. In Firefox, open the Library with the shortcut, or the menu button > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
  3. Click Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML…, select the file and click Open.

The other browser’s bookmarks bar arrives as an ordinary folder inside Bookmarks Menu (from Chrome it’s called Bookmarks bar). To put those links on your toolbar, open that folder in the Library, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) and drag the selection onto Bookmarks Toolbar in the left pane.

Import from another browser on this computer

  1. Click the menu button > Settings. On the Account and sync page (General in older versions), click Import Data under Import browser data. The Library’s Import Data from Another Browser… opens the same wizard.
  2. Choose the browser and its profile. The wizard knows Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Chromium on every system, Opera GX on Windows and Mac, and Safari on a Mac.
  3. Click the + button to choose the data, then Import. Enter your computer’s password if asked, then click Done.

The other browser’s bookmarks bar is added to the end of your Bookmarks Toolbar, which Firefox switches on. From Chrome-based browsers, Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks go into Other Bookmarks; Safari’s reading list becomes a Reading List (From Safari) folder in the Bookmarks Menu. A browser the wizard doesn’t list needs an HTML export. Step-by-step pages for Chrome, Edge, Safari, Opera.

Import a JSON or .jsonlz4 backup

Backups you make with Backup… end in .json; the automatic ones in your profile’s bookmarkbackups folder end in .jsonlz4.

Import from an old Firefox profile

Firefox creates a profile for each installation, so a reinstall or update can leave your bookmarks in another one. Open about:profiles and use Launch profile in new browser on the others. When one has your bookmarks, Mozilla’s advice is to keep using it: click Set as default profile. To merge, export from that window and import the file into your main profile. With a profile folder copied from an old computer, restore or convert a file from its bookmarkbackups folder.
