How to export your Firefox bookmarks
Open the Library with Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Shift+O on a Mac), click Import and Backup and choose Export Bookmarks to HTML…. Firefox saves a file called bookmarks.html that other browsers, and Firefox on another computer, can import.
Export to HTML, step by step
- Click the menu button at the right of the toolbar, then Bookmarks, then Manage bookmarks at the bottom of the panel. The shortcut above opens the same Library window.
- In the Library’s toolbar, click Import and Backup and choose Export Bookmarks to HTML….
- In the Export Bookmarks File window, pick a folder. The name is
bookmarks.htmlunless you change it, and Mozilla suggests the desktop. For a move to another computer, save it straight to a USB stick. - Click Save, then close the Library.
The steps are the same on Windows, Mac and Linux, and exporting leaves your bookmarks in Firefox exactly as they were.
HTML export or JSON backup?
The same menu has Backup…, which writes a different file. Mozilla’s rule: HTML for moving to another browser or computer, JSON for restoring inside Firefox.
| Export Bookmarks to HTML… | Backup… | |
|---|---|---|
| File | bookmarks.html | bookmarks-2026-10-18.json (today’s date), offered on your desktop |
| Other browsers | Import it | Firefox only, or convert it with our Firefox backup converter |
| Mobile Bookmarks folder | Left out | Included |
| Back into Firefox | Import Bookmarks from HTML… adds it to the Bookmarks Menu folder | Restore > Choose File… replaces all your bookmarks |
What the HTML file keeps
- Your folders: Bookmarks Menu items sit at the top level of the file, with Bookmarks Toolbar and Other Bookmarks as folders inside it (each one only if it holds bookmarks).
- Each bookmark’s details: address, title, date added and last modified, the site icon, and any keyword and tags.
- What stays behind: the Mobile Bookmarks folder that Firefox Sync fills from your phone, and everything that isn’t a bookmark, such as passwords and history.
Export bookmarks and passwords
Passwords have their own export. Click the menu button > Passwords (called Logins and Passwords in older versions), which opens about:logins. Click the three-dot menu at the top right, choose Export Passwords…, confirm with Continue with export and save the CSV file. Mozilla warns that the passwords in it are readable by anyone who opens it, so delete the file once you’ve imported it elsewhere.
If your Firefox has Backup under Settings > Account and sync, it can also keep one file with bookmarks, history and settings, refreshed every day. Tick Back up your sensitive data and set a password to add your passwords and payment methods. That file is for restoring Firefox on a new computer or after a reinstall; for another browser, use the HTML export and the CSV.
On Android, iPhone or iPad
Mozilla’s export steps are for computers, and on a phone its answer is Firefox Sync. Sign in to the same Mozilla account in Firefox on a computer, let your bookmarks arrive, then export there. Bookmarks saved on the phone land in Mobile Bookmarks, which the HTML export skips, so drag them into another folder in the Library first. Or make a Backup… and convert it with our Firefox backup converter, which keeps Mobile Bookmarks.
bookmarks.html into your profile folder every time it closes. Type about:config in the address bar, accept the warning, search for browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML and set it to true. A string preference named browser.bookmarks.file, holding a full file path, moves that copy somewhere else, such as a folder your cloud drive syncs. What to do with the file
- Another browser: Chrome, Edge and Safari all import this file.
- Another Firefox: import bookmarks into Firefox on the new computer.
- Read or tidy it: browse and search it in our bookmarks viewer, turn it into a spreadsheet with bookmarks to CSV, or strip links saved twice with the duplicate bookmark finder.
If you also use Chrome or Brave, Stackboard can turn those imported folders into a board of tiles on the new tab page there.
If the export doesn’t work
- No Import and Backup button: it lives in the Library window, which Ctrl+Shift+O opens.
- Bookmarks missing from the file: look in Mobile Bookmarks, which the export skips, and check the profile you’re in (
about:profilesshows the one in use). - Can’t find the file: search the computer for
bookmarks.html, starting with the desktop.
