How to import Safari bookmarks into Firefox on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Windows

Updated 18 October 2026

On a Mac, Firefox imports Safari directly: choose File > Import from Another Browser… in Firefox, pick Safari and follow the prompts for bookmarks, history and passwords. Firefox offers that import only on a Mac, so from an iPhone, an iPad or a Windows PC the bookmarks travel by export file or by sync.

Method 1: import on a Mac

  1. In Firefox, choose File > Import from Another Browser… in the menu bar. Firefox > Settings > Account and sync > Import Data opens the same wizard.
  2. Select Safari and the data you want to bring.
  3. If Firefox can’t read Safari’s files yet, it asks you to click Continue, then to select the Safari folder in the list and choose Open. Picking that folder gives Firefox read access to it.
  4. For passwords, Firefox lists the steps: open the Passwords app, choose File > Export All Passwords to File…, save the file, then click Select file in Firefox and pick it. On macOS versions before Sequoia, it sends you to Safari’s password settings for the export.
  5. Click Done.

Where Safari’s bookmarks go

In SafariIn Firefox
Favorites (the Favorites bar)Bookmarks Toolbar, which Firefox switches on
Bookmarks MenuBookmarks Menu
Reading ListA folder called Reading List (From Safari) inside the Bookmarks Menu
Bookmarks kept outside those foldersOther Bookmarks
HistoryFirefox history, from the last 180 days

The Reading List arrives as ordinary bookmarks, so the quickest way to it is the Bookmarks sidebar (Cmd+B). Firefox also copies the site icons Safari had saved for your bookmarks.

Method 2: export a file from Safari

Use this when Firefox is on another computer.

  1. In Safari, choose File > Export Browsing Data to File, tick Bookmarks (and Passwords if you want them), click Download and save. Safari 17 and earlier use File > Export > Bookmarks, which saves Safari Bookmarks.html.
  2. Double-click the .zip file to open it. The bookmarks are in Bookmarks.html and the passwords in Passwords.csv.
  3. In Firefox, open the Library and choose Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML…. For passwords, run Import Data and pick Passwords from CSV file.

A file import puts everything inside the Bookmarks Menu, your Favorites included as a folder. Apple warns that the export isn’t encrypted, so delete the zip and the CSV when you’re done. Exporting Safari bookmarks has more on the export.

From an iPhone or iPad

Firefox on iPhone and iPad gets its bookmarks through Firefox Sync, so they go through Firefox on a computer first:

Then sign in to the same Mozilla account in Firefox on the computer and on the phone or tablet. On the iPhone, tap the menu button at the bottom of the screen (top right on an iPad) > Sign In; under your account in Firefox’s settings, keep Bookmarks switched on. The imported bookmarks sync across.

On a Windows PC

Safari isn’t available for Windows, and Firefox there has no Safari import. Two routes work:
