How to move your Chrome bookmarks to Firefox

Updated 18 October 2026

Firefox reads Chrome directly. In Firefox, open Settings, go to Import browser data on the Account and sync page and click Import Data, then choose Chrome and what to bring. Your Chrome bookmarks bar ends up on Firefox’s Bookmarks Toolbar.

Import with Firefox’s wizard

  1. In Firefox, click the menu button > Settings. On the Account and sync page, click Import Data under Import browser data. The Library has the same wizard: Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser…
  2. Choose Google Chrome and the Chrome profile to import from.
  3. Click the + button to pick the data: bookmarks, browsing history, extensions and form autofill data.
  4. Click Import. You may be asked for your computer’s password. Click Done at the end.

For extensions, Firefox looks for Firefox versions of your most-used Chrome extensions from the same developers. Finish installing them from the menu: Finalize the installation of your imported add-ons.

Where your Chrome bookmarks land

Chrome can keep two bookmark files: one for bookmarks on the device and one for bookmarks saved in your Google Account. The Firefox 158 release imports the device file only. Firefox’s newer code, in beta in October 2026, reads both and merges folders that appear in both. Until that reaches your copy, bookmarks that Chrome’s Bookmark Manager lists under In your Google Account may stay behind, so use the HTML file route below, which takes everything. Firefox also has a place Chrome lacks, the Bookmarks Menu, which shows in the Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B) and the Library. File imports go there.

Passwords: a CSV on Windows and Linux

Mozilla says Firefox can no longer import Chrome passwords automatically on Windows or Linux. Export them from Chrome: three-dot menu > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > Settings > Export passwords > Download file. Then run Firefox’s Import Data again and choose Passwords from CSV file. Delete the CSV when you’re done. Saved payment methods from Chrome on Windows can’t be imported at all now, which Mozilla puts down to changes in Chrome’s encryption.

The HTML file route

Use it when Chrome is on another computer. Export from Chrome’s Bookmark Manager (three-dot menu > Export bookmarks; full steps), then in Firefox open the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O on Windows and Linux) and choose Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML….

A file import behaves differently: everything goes into the Bookmarks Menu, your Chrome bookmarks bar included, as a folder called Bookmarks bar. To get it onto the toolbar, open the Library, select that folder’s contents and drag them onto Bookmarks Toolbar.

Tab groups and the reading list

Neither moves: Chrome’s saved tab groups and reading list aren’t bookmarks, so the wizard and the export both leave them out. Before you switch, turn the tabs you care about into bookmarks. Chrome’s Ctrl+Shift+D bookmarks every tab in a window into one folder. Stackboard’s Stash this window (Alt+Shift+S) goes further and saves one folder per tab group under Other bookmarks › Stackboard, which the wizard then carries into Firefox’s Other Bookmarks. Stackboard itself is Chrome-only; the folders are plain bookmarks.

Problems you might hit

Questions

Can you import bookmarks from Chrome to Firefox?

Yes. Firefox’s Import Data wizard reads Chrome directly and brings bookmarks, history, extensions and form data. Chrome’s bookmarks bar lands on Firefox’s Bookmarks Toolbar.

Why didn’t my Chrome passwords import into Firefox?

On Windows and Linux, Firefox can’t read them any more. Export a CSV from Google Password Manager’s settings in Chrome and import it with Passwords from CSV file.

Where are my imported bookmarks in Firefox?

Wizard imports go to the Bookmarks Toolbar and Other Bookmarks. An HTML import goes into the Bookmarks Menu, which you’ll find in the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O) or the Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B).

Can I import Chrome tab groups into Firefox?

Not directly. Save the groups as bookmarks in Chrome first, import them, and open the folders in Firefox.

Do my Chrome extensions come across?

Firefox can’t run Chrome extensions, but the wizard looks for Firefox versions of your most-used ones from the same developer. Finish installing them from the menu afterwards.
