How to copy bookmarks between Chrome profiles (and Google accounts)
Open the Bookmark Manager in both profiles, select what you want in the first and press Ctrl+C, then click into a folder in the second and press Ctrl+V (Cmd on a Mac). Chrome copies the bookmarks with all their subfolders. To move everything at once, export an HTML file from one profile and import it into the other.
Method 1: copy and paste between Bookmark Managers
- In the profile you’re copying from, open the Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac).
- Select the bookmarks or folders. Ctrl+click (Cmd+click on a Mac) picks several, and Ctrl+A selects everything in the open folder. Press Ctrl+C.
- Switch profiles: click your profile picture at the top right and choose the other profile. It opens in its own window.
- Open that profile’s Bookmark Manager, click the folder you want on the left (for example Bookmarks bar), click an empty spot in the list and press Ctrl+V.
Folders arrive with everything inside them. These are copies: the originals stay put, and later changes in one profile don’t reach the other.
Method 2: export from one profile, import into the other
For a whole profile’s bookmarks, a file is quicker:
- In the source profile, open the Bookmark Manager, click its three-dot menu at the top right and choose Export bookmarks. Save the file.
- In the other profile, click Chrome’s three-dot menu > Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings, choose Bookmarks HTML File and pick the file. The Bookmark Manager’s own menu also has Import bookmarks.
- If that profile’s bookmarks bar already has bookmarks, look for a new folder called Imported at the end of it.
Chrome’s import window reads other browsers and HTML files, but it can’t read another Chrome profile directly, which is why the file step is needed.
Copy bookmarks to another Google account
In Chrome, each Google account lives in its own profile, so copying between accounts means copying between profiles:
- If the old account has no profile on this computer, add one: profile picture > Add Chrome profile, sign in with the old account and wait for its bookmarks to appear.
- Copy into the new account’s profile with method 1 or 2. Copies saved to the new account sync to every device signed in to it.
- Done with the old profile? Remove it from Manage Chrome profiles in the profile menu. Google notes that removing a profile erases its bookmarks and other data from the computer, so finish copying first.
Paste into the right group
A signed-in profile can show two groups in the Bookmark Manager, In your Google Account and Only on this device. Paste into a folder under In your Google Account if you want the copies on that account’s other devices; an import goes there by itself when the profile saves bookmarks to an account. Anything already under Only on this device can move up with the Save in your Google Account button.
When a profile won’t open
Every profile keeps its own Bookmarks file in its own folder: Default for the first profile, then Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on, and chrome://version shows the current one. If a profile won’t open, or it sits in another user account on the computer, copy its Bookmarks file out, convert it with our free Chrome bookmarks JSON to HTML tool and import the result into the profile you’re using.
Stackboard in several profiles
Stackboard works per profile, because it reads the bookmarks of the profile it’s installed in. To bring a board across, copy the Stackboard folder from Other bookmarks into the other profile’s Other bookmarks with method 1, then add Stackboard to that profile.
Questions
How do I copy bookmarks from one Google account to another?
Open both accounts as Chrome profiles, then copy and paste folders between their Bookmark Managers, or export an HTML file from one and import it into the other. The copies sync with the account you put them in.
Can I copy just one folder to another profile?
Yes. Select the folder in the first profile’s Bookmark Manager, press Ctrl+C, then paste it with Ctrl+V in the other profile’s Bookmark Manager. Its subfolders come too.
Do bookmarks copied between profiles stay in sync?
No. Each profile keeps its own copy, so a change in one doesn’t reach the other. Copy again after big changes.
Does this copy passwords or history too?
No, only bookmarks. Passwords have their own export and import in Google Password Manager’s settings.
Where is each profile’s bookmarks file?
In its own folder inside Chrome’s user data folder: Default for the first profile, then Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on. Open chrome://version in a profile to see its folder.
