Where Edge stores your favorites on Windows and Mac
Edge keeps your favorites (bookmarks) in a file called Bookmarks, with no extension, inside your profile folder. On Windows 10 and 11 that’s C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Bookmarks; on a Mac the folder is ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/Default.
Favorites file location by system
| System | Profile folder (the Bookmarks file is inside) |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 and 10 | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default, which is C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/Default |
| Edge Beta, Dev or Canary on a Mac | The same path with Microsoft Edge Beta, Microsoft Edge Dev or Microsoft Edge Canary in place of Microsoft Edge |
| Android, iPhone, iPad | Inside the app. Microsoft’s help for the apps covers syncing and viewing favorites, with no file to open |
Default is your first profile. Every other profile gets its own folder beside it, holding its own Bookmarks file.
Find your exact folder with edge://version
- Type
edge://versionin the address bar and press Enter. - Find Profile path. Microsoft’s documentation gives its form as
C:\Users\<Current-user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default. - Copy the path and paste it into File Explorer’s address bar. On a Mac, choose Go > Go to Folder in Finder and paste it there.
Browsing by hand and can’t see AppData? It’s hidden. In Windows 11 File Explorer, select View > Show > Hidden items. In Windows 10, select View > Options > Change folder and search options, then on the View tab choose Show hidden files, folders, and drives. On a Mac, hold Option in Finder’s Go menu to reveal Library.
The files that matter
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
Bookmarks | Every favorite in the profile, as JSON text, under the Favorites bar, Other favorites and Mobile favorites folders |
Bookmarks.bak | A backup copy. Chromium, which Edge is built on, copies Bookmarks here the first time your favorites change after the browser starts |
Both open in Notepad or TextEdit. Read them as much as you like, but don’t edit Bookmarks while Edge runs: the browser keeps favorites in memory and writes the file again after changes, and it can stay running in the background after its last window closes. To browse the file or bring it into a browser, convert a copy with our bookmarks JSON to HTML tool, which reads Edge’s file as it is, then open the result in the bookmarks viewer or import it.
Stored locally or in the cloud?
- On the computer, always: each profile’s
Bookmarksfile is the local copy, and Microsoft says profiles keep their data separate from each other. - In Microsoft’s cloud too, with sync on: signed in with favorites turned on under Settings > Profiles > Sync, Edge stores your data in the cloud and brings it to every device you sign in to. Microsoft’s sync help says this keeps it safe if you switch or lose a device.
- On some work networks: with on-premises sync, an administrator roams favorites and settings between computers in a file named
profile.pb, by default in%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge.
Removing a profile in Edge’s settings deletes its favorites from the computer, though Microsoft notes that data synced to your account may still be in its cloud.
Old paths from the Windows 10 Edge
Advice that sends you to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe is about the original Edge that came with Windows 10. Chromium’s importer for that old browser still looks there. Today’s Edge, built on Chromium, uses the User Data folder above.
Back it up or move it
The easiest backup is an export: Ctrl+Shift+O > More options > Export favorites (full steps). Copying Bookmarks to another drive works too. To bring a copied file back, convert it and import it, which adds the favorites without replacing anything; recovering deleted favorites walks through it. Chrome uses the same file format, and where Chrome stores bookmarks lists its folders.
Questions
Where are Edge favorites stored in Windows 11?
In C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Bookmarks, the same place as on Windows 10. Open edge://version and copy Profile path to go straight there.
Where are Edge bookmarks stored locally?
In the Bookmarks file in your profile folder, with Bookmarks.bak beside it. Each Edge profile has its own folder and its own file.
Are Edge favorites stored in the cloud?
When you’re signed in with sync on for favorites, yes: Edge keeps a copy in Microsoft’s cloud as well as the file on your computer. Without sync, they stay on the computer.
Can I open the Edge Bookmarks file?
Yes, in any text editor, because it’s JSON. Don’t edit it while Edge is running. To browse or import it, convert a copy with our JSON to HTML tool.
Where are Edge favorites stored on a Mac?
In ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/Default/Bookmarks. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and paste the folder path.
Use Chrome or Brave as well?
Stackboard is a free extension for Chrome and Brave that turns the new tab page into a board of your own bookmarks. No account, nothing leaves your browser.
