How to import Edge favorites into Chrome
Export your favorites from Edge as an HTML file, then import the file into Chrome. Chrome’s Import bookmarks and settings window can’t read today’s Edge: its Microsoft Edge option was built for the original Windows 10 Edge, so on most computers Edge never appears in the list.
Why Edge isn’t listed
Chrome’s Edge importer looks for the data folder of the old Edge app that came with Windows 10, before Microsoft rebuilt Edge on Chromium. Current Edge keeps its favorites somewhere else, so Chrome finds nothing to offer. On Windows 11 with Chrome 155 (checked October 2026), the From list showed only Microsoft Internet Explorer and Bookmarks HTML File (Firefox also appears when it’s installed). The file route gets around it.
Step 1: export favorites from Edge
- In Edge, go to
edge://favorites, or open the Favorites menu from the toolbar. - Click More options, the three dots at the top of the page beside Add favorite and Add folder.
- Choose Export favorites and save the HTML file.
Step 2: import the file into Chrome
- Open Chrome’s Bookmark Manager: Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac).
- Click the three-dot menu at the top right and choose Import bookmarks.
- Select the file from Edge. The long route, three-dot menu > Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings > Bookmarks HTML File, does the same.
How Edge’s names map to Chrome’s
| Edge | Chrome |
|---|---|
| Favorites | Bookmarks |
| Favorites bar | Bookmarks bar |
| Other favorites | Other bookmarks |
edge://favorites | chrome://bookmarks (the Bookmark Manager) |
If Chrome’s bookmarks bar is empty, the import goes onto it. If not, everything lands in a new folder called Imported at the end of the bar, with your Edge Favorites bar inside as a subfolder; drag its contents onto the bar to get the old layout back. On a full bar the new folder hides under the » button, and Google’s help also points to Other bookmarks.
Passwords and everything else
The favorites file holds favorites only. Export passwords from Edge’s password settings as a CSV file, import them in Chrome under Google Password Manager > Settings > Import passwords, then delete the CSV. History, open tabs and extensions stay in Edge; reinstall the extensions you need from the Chrome Web Store.
Edge won’t open?
Edge keeps favorites in a Bookmarks file in its profile folder, on Windows %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default. Copy it out, drop it into our bookmarks JSON to HTML converter and import the HTML file it gives you. Edge uses the same file format as Chrome.
Common problems
- “Unable to import” from Edge: expected, for the reason above. Use the file.
- Two copies of everything: import once. A second import creates Imported (1) with the same links; delete it, or run the export through our duplicate bookmark finder.
- Keeping both browsers: Edge can pull from Chrome any time (Settings > Profiles > Import browser data). Chrome can’t pull from Edge, so export again when Chrome needs to catch up.
- Synced everywhere: when Chrome saves bookmarks in your Google Account, the imported folder reaches every signed-in device, duplicates included.
Once the favorites are in Chrome, Stackboard can put them on your new tab page as a board: one click turns the bookmarks bar, the Imported folder included, into a space with a stack per folder.
Questions
Why isn’t Microsoft Edge listed in Chrome’s import options?
Chrome’s Edge importer reads the old Windows 10 version of Edge, which current Windows no longer has. Export your favorites from edge://favorites as an HTML file and import that.
Can you import bookmarks and passwords from Edge to Chrome?
Bookmarks, yes, through the exported file. Passwords travel separately: export a CSV from Edge’s password settings and import it in Google Password Manager.
Where do Edge favorites go in Chrome?
Onto the bookmarks bar if it was empty, otherwise into a new folder called Imported at the end of the bar.
How do I sync bookmarks between Chrome and Edge?
There’s no built-in two-way sync. Edge can re-import from Chrome whenever you like; to update Chrome, export from Edge again and clear the duplicates afterwards.
Can I get my favorites if Edge won’t start?
Yes. Copy the Bookmarks file from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default, convert it with our JSON to HTML tool and import the result into Chrome.
