How to sort Chrome bookmarks alphabetically (and by date)
Open the Bookmark Manager (Ctrl+Shift+O), select a folder, click the three-dot menu at the top right and choose Sort by name. Chrome sorts that folder A to Z with subfolders first. It has no lasting sort by date, but the side panel can list bookmarks newest or oldest first.
Sort a folder alphabetically
- Open the Bookmark Manager: Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac), or the three-dot menu › Bookmarks and lists › Open bookmarks manager (called Bookmark manager in older versions).
- On the left, click the folder you want to sort. Bookmarks bar works too.
- Click the three-dot menu at the top right of the page and choose Sort by name.
A Folder sorted message confirms it. What the sort does:
- Subfolders go first, then bookmarks, each group A to Z by name in your language’s alphabetical order.
- Only the open folder changes. Folders inside it keep their order, so open each one and sort it separately.
- It moves the bookmarks themselves, so the bookmarks bar and every other view show the new order.
- Sort by name is greyed out while you’re looking at search results, in folders your organization manages, and in folders with fewer than two items.
Undo a sort
The Folder sorted message has an Undo button that stays for 10 seconds. You can also press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z) in the Bookmark Manager right after sorting. Undo only reaches back through recent changes, so export your bookmarks before a big sort if the current order matters to you.
Sort every folder at once
Chrome sorts one folder at a time. To sort a whole collection in one go, export your bookmarks and drop the file into our free bookmark sorter. It sorts every folder and subfolder by name, by website or by date added, then gives you a file to import. Importing adds bookmarks next to the ones you have, so keep your export as a backup and delete the old set first (how to delete all bookmarks).
Sort by date added or last opened
The Bookmark Manager has no date sort. The bookmarks side panel has one, as a view:
- Open the three-dot menu › Bookmarks and lists › Show bookmarks in side panel.
- Click Organize at the top of the panel.
- Choose Sort by newest, oldest, last opened, A to Z or Z to A.
This changes only how the side panel lists things. Your bookmarks bar and the Bookmark Manager keep their order, and the panel always shows folders above bookmarks. The panel starts out sorted newest first, which is why its order rarely matches your bar. For a lasting date order, use the bookmark sorter’s newest or oldest option on an export.
Sort by hand
Drag bookmarks up or down in the Bookmark Manager, or along the bookmarks bar. To move a batch, select the bookmarks, press Ctrl+X, click the bookmark you want them to follow and press Ctrl+V (Cmd on a Mac).
On Android
Open Bookmarks from the three-dot menu, tap Sort and view options and pick an order: manual, newest, oldest, last opened, A to Z or Z to A. Folders stay at the top. Sort by manual order brings back your own arrangement.
Which method to use
| Method | What changes | How to undo |
|---|---|---|
| Sort by name in the Bookmark Manager | The real order of one folder | Undo button or Ctrl+Z |
| Organize in the side panel | Only the side panel’s list | Pick another sort |
| Bookmark sorter | Every folder in an exported file | Re-import your original export |
| Dragging | The real order, one item at a time | Drag it back |
Questions
How do I undo Sort by name in Chrome?
Click Undo on the Folder sorted message within 10 seconds, or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z) in the Bookmark Manager straight away. If it’s too late for either, restore the old order from an export.
Can Chrome sort bookmarks by date added?
Only as a view: the side panel’s Organize menu lists bookmarks newest or oldest first without moving them. For a lasting date order, run an export through the bookmark sorter.
Does Sort by name sort subfolders too?
It sorts only the folder you have open, with its subfolders listed first. Open each subfolder and sort it on its own, or sort everything in one pass with the bookmark sorter.
Why is Sort by name greyed out?
You’re looking at search results, the folder has fewer than two items, or your organization manages it. Clear the search box and pick a folder on the left.
