How to find and delete duplicate bookmarks in Chrome

Updated 18 October 2026

Chrome has no duplicate finder. You can spot repeats yourself with the Bookmark Manager’s search, or export your bookmarks, run the file through a duplicate finder and import the clean copy.

Check one page before you save it

Look at the star at the right end of the address bar. If it’s filled in and its tooltip says Edit bookmark for this tab, the page is already bookmarked. Clicking the star then opens Edit bookmark for the copy you have, so the star won’t make a second one.

Duplicates usually arrive another way. Bookmark all tabs saves every tab, so two tabs showing the same page become two bookmarks. Dragging a link onto the bookmarks bar adds a new bookmark each time, and every import adds a full set.

Find duplicates by hand

  1. Open the Bookmark Manager: Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac), or type chrome://bookmarks.
  2. Type a site name or part of an address into Search bookmarks. Results come from every folder.
  3. When the same page shows up twice, click the three dots next to one copy and choose Show in folder to see where it lives.
  4. To remove several, Ctrl+click (Cmd+click) each extra copy and press Delete. An Undo button stays on screen for 10 seconds, and Ctrl+Z works too.

For a quick check from any tab, type @bookmarks in the address bar, press Tab, then a word from the page title. Searching by hand is fine for a few sites. With hundreds of bookmarks, use the file method below.

Remove every duplicate at once

  1. Export a backup. In the Bookmark Manager, click the three-dot menu at the top right and choose Export bookmarks. Keep this file somewhere safe.
  2. Find the duplicates. Open our free duplicate bookmark finder and drop the file in. It groups links that point to the same page, treating http and https, www, trailing slashes and tracking tags as the same address, and gives you a clean file to download. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
  3. Clear out the old set. Chrome adds an imported file next to what you already have, so delete your current bookmarks first. How to delete all bookmarks has the steps.
  4. Import the clean file. In the Bookmark Manager’s three-dot menu choose Import bookmarks and pick it.
  5. Tidy up. Imported bookmarks go onto the bookmarks bar, either directly or inside a new folder called Imported. Drag them where you want them.

Why duplicates keep coming back

With sync on, your deletes reach every signed-in computer. If one of them was offline, check it once it reconnects.

Using Stackboard? When you copy your bookmarks bar into a Stackboard space, the board keeps its own copies under Other bookmarks › Stackboard. A duplicate finder lists those as well, so decide which set to keep before you delete anything.

Questions

Does Chrome have a built-in duplicate bookmark finder?

No. The Bookmark Manager can search and sort, but it doesn’t flag duplicates. Search by site name to check a few, or clean the whole collection with an export and the duplicate finder.

Why are my Chrome bookmarks duplicating themselves?

Usually an old bookmarks file was imported again, or the same bookmarks exist both in your Google Account and only on this device. Chrome adds every import as a new folder and never merges it with what you have.

Will deleting duplicates on my computer remove them from my phone?

Yes, when both are signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account and your bookmarks are saved there. Deletes sync like any other change.

Is it safe to put my bookmarks file into an online tool?

Our duplicate finder reads the file inside your browser and never uploads it. Keep your original export anyway, as a backup.
