How to delete all your bookmarks in Chrome
Open the Bookmark Manager (Ctrl+Shift+O), click Bookmarks bar, click any bookmark, press Ctrl+A and then Delete. Do the same for Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks. Export a backup first, because Chrome has no trash for bookmarks.
1. Save a backup
In the Bookmark Manager, click the three-dot menu at the top right and choose Export bookmarks. You can import that HTML file back into Chrome, or into any other browser. How to export Chrome bookmarks has more detail.
2. Delete everything
- Open the Bookmark Manager: Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on a Mac), or
chrome://bookmarks. - Click Bookmarks bar on the left.
- Click any item in the list, then press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A) to select everything in that folder. Selected subfolders take their contents with them.
- Press Delete, or right-click the selection and choose Delete.
- Repeat for Other bookmarks and, if it’s there, Mobile bookmarks. If the left side shows two groups, In your Google Account and Only on this device, clear the folders in both.
Chrome shows a message counting what you deleted, with an Undo button that stays for 10 seconds (Ctrl+Z also works). The top folders themselves can’t be deleted. They stay, empty.
3. Decide what happens on your other devices
When you’re signed in to Chrome, your bookmarks are saved in your Google Account, so deleting them removes them from every computer and phone signed in to that account.
- Clear one computer only: sign out of Chrome there (profile picture › Sign out of Chrome). Chrome removes your account’s bookmarks from that computer and keeps them in your account. Bookmarks saved only on that device stay behind, so delete those in the Bookmark Manager.
- Clear your Google Account as well: go to chrome.google.com/data and choose Delete data. That deletes everything Chrome keeps in your account, passwords included, so treat it as a last resort.
Bookmarks that won’t delete or keep coming back
| What happens | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A Managed bookmarks folder (or one named by your organization) won’t go | An administrator adds it with the ManagedBookmarks policy | Hide it: right-click the bookmarks bar and untick Show managed bookmarks (under Show bookmark bar in Chrome 156 and later) |
| Delete is greyed out for every bookmark | Bookmark editing is switched off by the EditBookmarksEnabled policy | Only the administrator can change it |
| They return when you sign back in | You deleted them while signed out, and your account still had them | Sign in, then delete |
| They come back later by themselves | An extension or another bookmark sync tool writes them back, or an old file was imported again | Pause other sync tools and extensions, and look for folders named Imported |
| Gone here, still on your phone | The phone uses another account, or isn’t signed in | Sign in with the same account, or delete them on the phone |
On a phone
On an iPhone or iPad, open the three-dot menu › Bookmarks, tap Select at the bottom, tap the bookmarks you want gone and tap Delete. On Android, tap the three dots next to a bookmark and choose Delete. If your phone and computer share a Google Account, deleting on the computer is quicker, and the phone follows.
Questions
Can I get my bookmarks back after deleting them all?
Straight away, yes: click Undo or press Ctrl+Z in the Bookmark Manager. After that you need a backup file or another copy; see how to recover deleted bookmarks.
Does clearing browsing data delete bookmarks?
No. Delete browsing data removes history, cookies, cached files and similar data, and your bookmarks stay where they are.
How do I delete bookmarks on one computer and keep them on the others?
Sign out of Chrome on that computer. Chrome removes your account’s bookmarks from it and keeps them in your Google Account for your other devices.
Why can’t I delete some bookmarks in Chrome?
If they sit in a Managed bookmarks folder, or every delete option is greyed out, your organization controls them through Chrome policies. You can hide the managed folder from the bar, but only an administrator can remove it.
