How to save all your open tabs in Firefox

Updated 18 October 2026

Press Ctrl+Shift+D (Cmd+Shift+D on a Mac) and Firefox bookmarks every tab in the window into one new folder. To get the same tabs back each time Firefox starts, tick Open previous windows and tabs in Settings, under Home and startup.

Bookmark all tabs at once

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+D. The same command is Bookmarks > Bookmark All Tabs… in the menu bar; on Windows and Linux, press Alt to show the menu bar.
  2. In the New Bookmarks window, replace [Folder Name] with a name you’ll recognize, such as the project or the date, and choose a Location. The Bookmarks Toolbar keeps the folder one click away.
  3. Click Save. Nothing closes, so close the tabs yourself when you’re ready.

To choose the tabs yourself, Ctrl+click them (Cmd+click on a Mac), right-click one of them and pick Bookmark Tabs…. For the whole window this way, right-click a tab and choose Select All Tabs first.

What Bookmark All Tabs skips

Firefox’s code saves the unpinned tabs it shows in the tab strip, one bookmark per page, so three things are left out:

Open the tabs again

Right-click the folder on the Bookmarks Toolbar, in the Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B) or in the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O) and choose Open All Bookmarks. For 15 tabs or more, Firefox asks first; click Open tabs. If the toolbar vanishes once a page loads, it’s set to show on new tabs only (how to show the bookmarks toolbar).

Keep your tabs when you close Firefox

By default Firefox starts on your home page. To have it reopen your windows and tabs:

  1. Click the menu button and choose Settings.
  2. Open Home and startup (the General panel in older versions) and, under Startup, tick Open previous windows and tabs.
  3. Quit from the menu: Exit on Windows, Quit on Linux, Firefox > Quit Firefox on a Mac. Mozilla notes that if you close windows one at a time, only the last one is restored.

Firefox has no prompt that asks to save your tabs when you quit, so this setting is what keeps them. Pinned tabs come back either way, and private windows never do. If the checkbox is greyed out, look for Always use private browsing mode in your history settings and turn it off.

Forgot to switch it on? Right after Firefox opens, press Ctrl+Shift+T or choose History > Restore previous session from the menu, and the last session comes back (more ways to reopen tabs).

Park tabs in a tab group

For tabs you’ll need again in a few days, a tab group does the job without bookmarks. Drag one tab onto another to start a group, add the rest, then right-click the group’s name and choose Save and close group. It waits in the List all tabs menu at the right end of the tab strip. Mozilla says groups stay on this computer and don’t sync; Firefox tab groups has the details.

Keep a plain list of links

The group menu also has Copy 5 links in group (with your group’s count), which copies one address per line. Paste the list into our free URLs to bookmarks tool for a bookmarks file any browser imports, or keep it in a note and reopen every link later with open multiple URLs. If you save tabs with the OneTab add-on, OneTab to bookmarks converts its export the same way. All three tools run in Firefox and upload nothing.

Saving everything and starting from an empty window has a name: tab bankruptcy. If you also use Chrome or Brave, Stackboard’s Stash this window saves every tab there as bookmarks and closes them in one step.

On Android

Open the tab tray (the tab counter next to the address bar), tap the three-dot menu and choose Select tabs, then tap each tab you want. The bookmark button at the top saves them all, and Firefox tells you which folder they went into. The selection’s three-dot menu also has Add to collection, which keeps the tabs in a Collection on the home screen; Mozilla notes collections stay on the phone and don’t sync. Mozilla’s help for iPhone and iPad has no steps for saving every tab at once.

Questions

How do I save open tabs in Firefox when closing?

Open Settings > Home and startup and tick Open previous windows and tabs under Startup. Then quit from the menu with all your windows still open. Private windows are never restored.

Is there a Firefox shortcut to bookmark all tabs?

Yes: Ctrl+Shift+D on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+D on a Mac. It saves the current window’s tabs into one new folder, leaving out pinned tabs and tabs in collapsed groups.

How do I save multiple windows in Firefox?

For bookmarks, press Ctrl+Shift+D in each window. To keep every window across a restart, turn on Open previous windows and tabs and quit from the menu while all of them are open.

Where are saved tabs stored in Firefox?

Bookmarked tabs are ordinary bookmarks in the folder you picked, so the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O) shows them. Firefox keeps your session in the profile folder: sessionstore.jsonlz4 once it has closed, and the files in sessionstore-backups while it runs.

Can I bookmark all tabs in Firefox on Android?

Yes. In the tab tray, tap the three-dot menu, choose Select tabs, tap the tabs you want and then the bookmark button. Firefox shows which folder they were saved in.

Use Chrome or Brave as well?

Stackboard is a free extension for Chrome and Brave that turns the new tab page into a board of your own bookmarks. No account, nothing leaves your browser.

Add to Chrome, it’s free
