How to move Firefox bookmarks and passwords to Safari
On a Mac, open Safari and choose File > Import From Browser > Firefox, pick what to bring and click Import. Apple says this copies bookmarks, history and passwords, and Firefox has to be installed on that Mac. For Firefox on another computer, or for an iPhone or iPad, export bookmarks.html from Firefox and import the file.
Method 1: import directly on a Mac
- Open Safari and choose File > Import From Browser > Firefox. In Safari 17 and earlier the menu is File > Import From > Firefox.
- Select the items you want: bookmarks, history, passwords.
- Click Import.
If Firefox was your default browser, Safari may offer this on its own: the first time you open it, a message at the bottom of the start page asks whether to keep your imported items, remove them or decide later. Bookmarks > Show Start Page brings that page back. You can also run the import again at any time, even after an earlier one.
Where they end up
Apple says imported bookmarks appear after your existing bookmarks, imported history joins your existing history, and imported passwords go into your iCloud Keychain. Some names change on the way:
| Firefox | Safari |
|---|---|
| Bookmarks Toolbar | Favorites, shown in the Favorites bar (View > Show Favorites Bar) |
| Bookmarks sidebar, Cmd+B | Bookmarks sidebar, Control+Cmd+1 |
| Library, Cmd+Shift+O | Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks |
| Tags | No counterpart |
To put your old toolbar sites on Safari’s Favorites bar, open Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks, scroll to the imported bookmarks at the end and drag the ones you use every day into Favorites. Safari shows the same Favorites on its start page and when you open a new tab.
Method 2: import a bookmarks.html file
- In Firefox, open the Library (Ctrl+Shift+O, or Cmd+Shift+O on a Mac), choose Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML… and save the file. Copy it to the Mac.
- In Safari 18 or later, choose File > Import Browsing Data from File or Folder, click Choose File or Folder, select the file and click Import.
- In Safari 17 and earlier, choose File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML File. Apple says the bookmarks then appear in the sidebar below Bookmarks, in a new folder whose name begins with Imported and ends with the date.
One folder never makes it into Firefox’s file: Mobile Bookmarks, which holds what you saved in Firefox on your phone. If you want those in Safari as well, choose Import and Backup > Backup… in the Library and run the .json backup through our Firefox backup converter, which writes them into the HTML file it makes.
Passwords from Firefox
The direct import includes passwords. With the file route, they travel separately:
- In Firefox, click the menu button > Passwords, then the three-dot menu > Export Passwords… > Continue with export, and save the CSV.
- On the Mac, open the Passwords app and choose File > Import Passwords from File, then Choose File and Import. Safari’s Import Browsing Data from File or Folder takes the CSV too.
- Click Delete when the Passwords app offers to remove the file. Apple notes that imported passwords don’t replace ones you already have.
On iPhone or iPad
- With a Mac: import on the Mac. When Safari is turned on in iCloud, your bookmarks stay the same on all your devices, so they reach the iPhone and iPad too.
- Without a Mac: export
bookmarks.htmlfrom Firefox on your computer and save it to iCloud Drive, or email it to yourself. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Safari, tap Import below History and Website Data, tap Choose File, pick the file and tap Import to Safari, then Done. A passwords CSV imported this way goes into the Passwords app. - Firefox on a Windows PC: Apple’s iCloud Bookmarks add-on for Firefox, with iCloud for Windows, keeps your Firefox bookmarks on the PC in step with Safari on your iPhone and iPad.
Common problems
- Firefox isn’t under Import From Browser: Apple says Firefox must be installed on the Mac you import on. Otherwise, use the file.
- Imported bookmarks not showing: they come after your existing bookmarks. Open the Bookmarks sidebar and scroll down, or search for a site you know you had.
- Two copies: Safari lets you import again after an earlier import, which can leave you with duplicates. For a clean set, run the Firefox export through our duplicate bookmark finder and import that file once.
- Every Apple device changed: with iCloud for Safari on, the import and any cleanup reach your iPhone and iPad as well.
