The best new tab extensions for Chrome in 2026

Updated 18 October 2026

Pick by what you want to see when you open a tab: a calm photo and a focus (Momentum, Bonjourr), tiles of favorite sites (Speed Dial, Infinity), pages of links and widgets (start.me), or your own bookmarks laid out as a board (Stackboard).

Who wrote this: we make Stackboard, one of the extensions below. Everything about the others comes from their Chrome Web Store listings, pricing pages and recent reviews, read in October 2026. Where another tool fits a need better, we say so.

The picks

Bonjourr: the best minimal page

Free, open source and without an account or data collection, Bonjourr shows a photo, the time, weather and a few quick links. It has 400,000 users and 4.9 stars from about 24,400 ratings (October 2026), the highest score here. If you want calm and nothing else, start here.

Momentum: focus and to-dos

A daily photo, a greeting, your focus for the day and a to-do list. It has 2 million users and 4.2 stars from about 13,700 ratings (October 2026). Plus ($39.95 a year) adds integrations and Tab Stash; Momentum’s privacy policy says Tab Stash sends your open tabs to its servers.

Infinity New Tab: icon grids

Grids of site icons with wallpapers and widgets, popular for its looks. The main listing has 400,000 users and 4.5 stars from about 11,800 ratings (October 2026).

Speed Dial 2 and FVD Speed Dial: tiles

Both put big tiles of favorite sites on the new tab. FVD Speed Dial has 500,000 users and 4.4 stars from about 117,800 ratings and shows sponsored tiles; Speed Dial 2 has 2.2 stars from about 7,700 ratings, with recent reviews unhappy about its subscription (both October 2026).

start.me: pages of links

Pages of bookmark lists, RSS and widgets, often shared by researchers. The free plan allows 3 pages with ads. Its Chrome extension was last updated in January 2024.

Stackboard: your bookmarks, organized

Ours. Stackboard shows the bookmarks you already have in Chrome as a board: spaces in a sidebar, stacks of links, search with /, one-click tab stashing and themes including Catppuccin, Gruvbox, Nord and true black. No account, no ads, open source, and everything stays an ordinary Chrome bookmark. It has no weather, quotes or to-dos.

A note on ratings: in October 2026 the Chrome Web Store began weighting recent reviews more heavily, and several long-running extensions dropped a few tenths of a star overnight with the same number of ratings. Treat the stars as a recent-satisfaction signal.

Only one can own the new tab

Chrome lets a single extension replace the new tab page. If you install a second one, the newest usually takes over; turn the others off in chrome://extensions. The first time an extension takes over, Chrome asks whether to keep the change: see what “Change back to Google?” means.

Questions

Can I use two new tab extensions at once?

No. Only one extension can replace the new tab page at a time. Turn off the one you don’t want in chrome://extensions.

Which new tab extension is the most private?

Bonjourr and Stackboard both work without an account and say they collect no data; Stackboard makes no network requests at all and keeps everything in Chrome’s bookmarks.

How do I go back to Chrome’s normal new tab page?

Turn the extension off in chrome://extensions. Chrome’s own page returns straight away.
