How to reopen closed tabs in Chrome

Updated 18 October 2026

Press Ctrl+Shift+T (Cmd+Shift+T on a Mac) and Chrome reopens the last tab you closed. Press it again to keep going back. If the last thing you closed was a whole window, the same shortcut brings the window back with all its tabs.

1. The shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+T

Chrome reopens closed tabs in the order you closed them, newest first, so keep pressing the shortcut to walk back through them. It also works after a restart: Google's own advice after relaunching Chrome is to press Ctrl+Shift+T to get the previous tabs back (more in restoring tabs after a restart).

Prefer the mouse? Right-click an empty part of the tab strip, next to your last tab, and choose Reopen closed tab.

The list behind the shortcut holds 25 closed tabs and windows, a limit set in Chrome's source code. For anything older, go to History.

2. Pick from the History menu

  1. Click the three-dot menu at the top right and point to History.
  2. Under Recent tabs, Chrome lists the last eight tabs, windows and tab groups you closed. A closed window appears as a count, such as 6 tabs, and a closed group appears under its name.
  3. Click a tab to reopen it. Point to a window or group to see what was in it, then click Restore window or Restore group, or pick a single tab from the list.

On a Mac, the History menu in the menu bar has the same list under Recently Closed. Older versions of Chrome used that label everywhere, which is why many guides still mention it.

3. Search your history

For a tab you closed days ago, press Ctrl+H (Cmd+Y on a Mac) to open the History page and type a word you remember from the page into the search box. Chrome keeps 90 days of history. You can also search from the address bar: type @history, press Tab, then type your search words.

Pages you open in Incognito never go into History, so a closed Incognito tab can't be found this way.

4. Tab Search lists recently closed tabs

Press Ctrl+Shift+A (Cmd+Shift+A on a Mac). Below your open tabs, Tab Search shows the ones you closed recently, and clicking one brings it back. More in how to search open tabs.

5. Tabs from your other devices

If the tab was open on your phone or another computer, open the History page and choose Tabs from other devices on the left. This works when you're signed in to Chrome on both devices with History and tabs turned on in your sync settings.

A closed tab group

Recent versions of Chrome save every tab group, so a group you closed waits in the three-dot menu under Tab groups: click its name to reopen it. A deleted group is gone, because deleting removes it from every device signed in to your Google Account. See Chrome tab groups disappeared for the other places to look.

On Android

Open the tab switcher and type in Search your tabs. Along with open tabs, the results include recently closed tabs and tabs from your other devices. On an Android tablet, Recent tabs in the Chrome menu lists closed tabs and windows, and Ctrl+Shift+T works with a keyboard.

Keep the tabs you'll want next week

Chrome's closed-tab list is a short-term safety net. For tabs you plan to come back to, save them: Ctrl+Shift+D bookmarks every tab in the window into one folder (see how to save all open tabs). Stackboard saves and clears the window in one step with Alt+Shift+S, one stack per tab group, and any stack reopens later as a named tab group.

Using another browser? See reopening closed tabs in Firefox, Edge and Safari.

Questions

What is the shortcut to reopen a closed tab in Chrome?

Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+T on a Mac. Press it again to reopen the tab you closed before that one.

How do I restore a closed window in Chrome?

If the window was the last thing you closed, press Ctrl+Shift+T. Otherwise open the three-dot menu, point to History, point to the entry that shows a number of tabs and click Restore window.

How far back can Chrome reopen closed tabs?

The shortcut can walk back through 25 closed tabs and windows, and the History menu shows the last eight. Older pages are on the History page, which keeps 90 days.

Why did Ctrl+Shift+T open a whole window?

Because the last thing you closed was a window. The shortcut reopens things in the order you closed them, and a window comes back with all its tabs.

Can I reopen a closed Incognito tab?

History can't help: Chrome doesn't save the pages you visit in Incognito, so they never appear there.
