How to save all your open tabs in Safari (Mac, iPhone and iPad)
On a Mac, save all your open tabs in Safari as a Tab Group: click the down arrow next to the Sidebar button, choose New Tab Group with N Tabs (Safari fills in your count) and type a name. With Safari turned on in iCloud, the group also appears on your iPhone and iPad. On an iPad, Safari can bookmark every tab at once.
On a Mac: turn the window into a Tab Group
- Tabs in several windows? Choose Window > Merge All Windows first to put them in one window.
- Click the down arrow next to the Sidebar button (with the sidebar open, click the Add Tab Group button in the toolbar).
- Choose New Tab Group with N Tabs, type a name and press Return.
To come back, choose the group from the same menu or click it in the sidebar.
Only some of the tabs
Choose New Empty Tab Group from the down arrow menu and name it. Select tabs by clicking one and Command-clicking the others (Shift-click takes every tab in between), then drag them onto the group in the sidebar. For one tab, Control-click it and choose Move to Tab Group.
Keep your windows when you quit Safari (Mac)
- Choose Safari > Settings and click General.
- In the Safari opens with menu, choose the option for all windows from your last session (a second one leaves private windows out).
Can’t find it? Apple says some of these options only show when Close windows when quitting an application is on in System Settings > Desktop & Dock. That setting closes an app’s windows when you quit, and they don’t reopen by themselves.
Already lost a session? Choose History > Reopen All Windows from Last Session. And if tabs vanish after a day, a week or a month, set Automatically close tabs in Safari > Settings > Tabs to Manually.
On iPad: bookmark every tab at once
- Tap the Tabs button to see all your tabs.
- Tap the More button, then tap Add Bookmarks for N Tabs.
Find them with your other bookmarks: tap the Show Sidebar button, then Bookmarks below Saved. To group some tabs instead, tap the More button in the sidebar, tap Select Tabs and pick them, then touch and hold one and tap Move to Tab Group. The same menu has Copy N Links for pasting them elsewhere.
On iPhone: move the tabs into a Tab Group
Apple’s iPhone guide has no command that bookmarks every tab, so keep them in a Tab Group:
- Tap the Tabs button (in the Compact layout on iOS 26: the More button, then All Tabs).
- Touch and hold a tab, tap Move Tab, then New Tab Group. Enter a name and tap the Done button.
- Move the other tabs the same way, choosing the new group.
Groups are listed at the bottom center of the Tabs screen. If Safari has sorted your tabs into topics with Apple Intelligence, tap a topic, tap the More button and choose Move Tabs to move all of its tabs into a Tab Group at once.
What about the Reading List?
The Reading List is for pages to read later, and Safari can save them for offline reading. Apple’s guides add one page at a time: Shift+Cmd+D adds the current page on a Mac, and on iPhone and iPad it’s Share, then Add to Reading List (on iPhone, Share is in the Page Menu unless your tab layout is Bottom or Top). Apple lists no command that sends every tab there, so a whole window belongs in a Tab Group.
Which one to use
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Put a window’s tabs away and switch back to them later | A Tab Group |
| Keep the links for months, with a backup | Bookmarks, which iCloud archives automatically |
| Read a few pages later, even offline | The Reading List |
| Find the same windows open next time | Safari opens with set to your last session (Mac) |
Opening them again
- A Tab Group: open it from the sidebar on a Mac or iPad, or tap it at the bottom of the Tabs screen on iPhone.
- A Favorites bar folder: on a Mac, Command-click it to open all its bookmarks in tabs.
- A list of links: paste it into our open multiple URLs tool to open them all, in Safari or any browser. On a Mac, dragging a Tab Group from the sidebar into an email message puts its links there, and URLs to bookmarks turns any list into a file you can import into Safari.
Still missing tabs?
- Closed by mistake: Shift+Cmd+T on a Mac, or the recently closed list on iPhone and iPad (reopen closed tabs in Safari).
- A group missing on another device: both need Safari on in iCloud with the same Apple Account; Safari Tab Groups has more fixes.
- Too many to sort: see too many tabs and tab bankruptcy.
Also use Chrome or Brave? There, Stackboard saves every tab in a window as ordinary bookmarks in one step. It doesn’t run in Safari.
