How to move Chrome bookmarks to Brave

Updated 18 October 2026

Yes, Brave can import straight from Chrome. Open brave://settings/importData (or the Brave menu > Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks and Settings), choose your Chrome profile and click Import. Two things need a file: passwords, and bookmarks Chrome keeps in your Google Account.

Import from Chrome

  1. Open brave://settings/importData, or the menu (three lines at the top right) > Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks and Settings.
  2. In the list of detected browsers, pick your Chrome profile. Brave shows one Google Chrome entry per profile, followed by the profile’s name.
  3. Tick what you want. For Chrome, Brave 1.97 on Windows offered Browsing history, Favorites/Bookmarks and Extensions (checked October 2026). Click Import.

Where the bookmarks land

Brave adds a folder at the end of its bookmarks bar whose name starts with Imported from, holding your Chrome bookmarks bar and Other bookmarks as two subfolders. If Brave’s bar was empty, your Chrome bar items land on the bar itself and the rest go into that folder. Can’t see the bar? Brave’s Appearance settings set it to show always, never or only on the new tab page; showing the bookmarks bar in Brave has the steps.

Missing bookmarks? Use the file route

Brave’s importer reads Chrome’s main Bookmarks file, and only its bookmarks bar and Other bookmarks. Newer versions of Chrome keep bookmarks saved in your Google Account in a separate file, and Brave’s code (checked October 2026) reads neither that file nor Chrome’s Mobile bookmarks. If folders are missing, or the Favorites/Bookmarks box isn’t offered for a profile (Brave shows it only when that main file exists), go through an HTML file:

  1. In Chrome: Bookmark Manager > three-dot menu > Export bookmarks (full steps). The export includes everything, Google Account bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks too.
  2. In Brave: brave://settings/importData > Bookmarks HTML File > Choose File, then pick the export.

Passwords

Brave’s help says Chrome passwords can’t be imported directly because of how Chrome encrypts them, and gives the workaround: in Chrome, go to chrome://password-manager/settings and click Download file under Export passwords; in Brave, go to brave://password-manager/settings and click Select file under Import passwords. Delete the CSV afterwards.

Problems you might hit

Bring your new tab with you

Brave installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store, and Stackboard works in Brave too. If you used it in Chrome, add it to Brave from the store (or tick Extensions in the import), then make sure its Stackboard folder sits directly in Brave’s Other bookmarks; drag it out of the imported folder if it landed there. To swap Brave’s dashboard for your board, see changing the new tab page in Brave.

Questions

Can you import bookmarks from Chrome to Brave?

Yes. Open brave://settings/importData, choose your Chrome profile, keep Favorites/Bookmarks ticked and click Import.

Why can’t Brave import my Chrome passwords?

Brave says Chrome’s password encryption blocks it. Export a CSV at chrome://password-manager/settings and import it at brave://password-manager/settings.

Why are some Chrome bookmarks missing in Brave?

Brave reads Chrome’s main Bookmarks file only, so bookmarks Chrome saves in your Google Account and Mobile bookmarks can be left out. Export an HTML file from Chrome and import that.

Where do imported bookmarks go in Brave?

Into a folder at the end of the bookmarks bar whose name starts with Imported from, or straight onto the bar if Brave’s bar was empty.

Will my Chrome extensions work in Brave?

Brave installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store, and its import offers an Extensions option for Chrome profiles.
